Roll Forming Tooling Inspection Checklist Before a Trial Run

By Halcyon Machinery · Technical content review · Published · Video added · Updated

Before a trial run, check that the tooling set matches the approved drawing and setup record. Inspect visible roll surfaces, shaft and support condition, station identity, spacing and alignment using the supplier's documented method, then confirm the setup with an identified material trial and measured finished samples.

Identity first, then condition, then setup

Match the tooling or station record to the approved profile and drawing revision. For changeable or shared tooling, record the spacers, positions and adjustment settings used for the trial. Then look for visible contamination, damage, loose components and unusual contact marks.

After the first pieces, use the agreed trial material and record first-piece measurements. If the part is adjusted, keep the before-and-after setup record so the accepted sample traces to the final configuration.

Questions buyers ask

What should be checked before feeding trial material?

Confirm tooling identity, visible roll condition, installed spacers or adjustments, fasteners, supports and the documented setup. Use the supplier's approved inspection and isolation procedure.

Does polished tooling prove profile accuracy?

No. Surface appearance does not prove alignment or finished dimensions. Accuracy must be checked on identified samples against the approved drawing.

What evidence should remain after adjustment?

Keep the final setup record, trial material details, sample ID, measured results, deviations and the person who reviewed each item.
