With prepainted roof panels, the finish is already on the coil when it enters the machine, so every guide, roll, cutter and stacker touches the face your customer will see. Approve the line on a trial with your actual prepainted coil, then inspect labelled first-off and repeat sheets at the same contact points on every configuration you are quoting. An unpainted sample or a clean catalogue photo will not show you the marks that matter.

What to send before we quote
“Color steel” on an enquiry is too vague to configure a line. Take these details from the coil supplier’s actual documents and your drawing:
| Input | What to state |
|---|---|
| Steel and coating | Steel grade, base-metal and coated thickness range, coating system and coil datasheet |
| Coil | Coil width and the intended exposed face |
| Profile | Finished profile drawing with revision, plus any punching layout |
| Production | Target panel lengths and target output under stated conditions |
| Appearance | The agreed visible-face standard the sheets will be judged against |
The European Coil Coating Association notes that prepainted metals are formed with the finish already in place and that tooling condition matters. Use the forming guidance for your selected coil, not a test result from a different coating.
Where the line touches the painted face
| Contact stage | What the buyer should inspect | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Entry and guide | Visible-face orientation, strip tracking and guide contact | Identified coil and recorded setup for trial |
| Forming rolls | Repeat marks, scuffs or coating disturbance at high-contact points | First-off and later sheet photos under the same lighting |
| Cut-off and transfer | Burrs and sharp edges that could mark adjacent panels | Edge inspection and handling path |
| Outfeed and stack | Face-to-face contact, separators and pack removal | Agreed finished-pack inspection |
The National Coil Coating Association lists rough tooling, clearance and alignment as causes of marring. When you find a mark, also check incoming coil defects, storage and handling before attributing it to the rolls.
Running the witnessed sheet trial
Record which coil and drawing revision the trial uses. Keep a first-off sheet and later sheets from an agreed run, inspect their visible faces under consistent light, and photograph every contact mark with its position on the sheet. Measure the profile and effective cover width as a separate check, using the cover-width/lap trial. If a second color, coating system, thickness or profile is in the purchase scope, agree up front which of those changes get their own trial.
Protective film: when to ask for it
Film is one possible control, not a universal fix. Ask whether the coating supplier recommends it for your surface, whether the proposed machine includes an applicator, where film goes on and comes off, and whether holes, cutting or heat could affect it. Metform markets in-line film applicators for some metal-processing lines as one example of the configuration; see our film application scope. Count film as included only once it appears in the quotation and the trial plan.
Buyer questions
Can an unpainted steel trial prove a painted panel will look acceptable? No. Test the specified finished-surface material, or keep it as an open acceptance condition.
Does protective film guarantee a scratch-free panel? No. Tooling condition, contact pressure and handling still need inspection, and the film must suit the actual coating and process.
Does a clean sample prove the roof system is certified? No. The sample checks the manufactured sheet; fire, structural, weather and installed-system compliance need separate project evidence.
